Free Art Lesson: "Grid Pattern Technique"

The grid pattern technique is used to keep an image in proportion. This painting is a good example of this process.

This basic image was inspired while looking at a book of tribal mask illustrations. One of the masks was then adapted to a study drawing.

After that, a pencil grid pattern was then superimposed over the sketch. The sketch was then redrawn on a painted canvas with a light grid pattern penciled in. After the image was redrawn on the canvas, the grid was painted over.
